MUON
Dirty Boost

The MUON is a highly musical dirty boost inspired by the Analogman Bad Bob. While the original uses 2N5457 JFETs for a cleaner response, the MUON is built around NOS J201 JFETs, which break up earlier and deliver tube-like saturation that reacts dynamically to your pickups and playing style. An additional JFET buffer stage preserves high-end sparkle through long cable runs. A single volume control and a Dirt toggle give you everything from edge-of-breakup shimmer to thick, saturated drive.

NOS J201 JFETs for Tube-Like Response

JFETs share the same square-law transfer characteristics as triode vacuum tubes, with high input impedance and soft clipping behavior that delivers natural, harmonically rich saturation. At the heart of the MUON are NOS J201 JFETs, chosen for their warm, dynamic character that reacts beautifully to your picking attack and guitar volume.

Cascode Topology with Dirt Toggle

The circuit is based on a cascode (mu-amp) topology, a design borrowed directly from tube amplifier schematics and translated to silicon. An additional JFET stage preserves clarity and punch even through long cable runs. In standard mode, single coils deliver touch-sensitive breakup at the edge of saturation. Roll back your guitar's volume for sparkle, dig in for grit. With humbuckers, expect more gain even in standard mode; use your volume knob to dial it back or lean into the thickness. Engage the Dirt switch for richer saturation, added harmonics, and amp-like sustain that pushes single coils into overdrive territory and humbuckers toward distortion.

NOS J201 JFET

The J201 is one of the most sought-after JFETs in boutique pedal building, prized for its tube-like warmth and dynamic response. These components are increasingly scarce, and their electrical characteristics vary widely between devices. Only a select few meet the precise specifications required for our circuits. Many builders have resorted to surface-mount alternatives, but we source and hand-test NOS through-hole J201s for that irreplaceable vintage mojo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the MUON cost more than other single-stage pedals?

The MUON is built around NOS J201 JFETs, which are becoming extremely scarce. These vintage components are essential to the MUON's tube-like response and dynamic character. As supply dwindles, sourcing tested, matched J201s has become more difficult and expensive.
